I found this photo on a friends Facebook page and did this ink drawing based on that photo. It started as a more "loose" pen and ink drawing, but the more ink I applied, the more it really looked like my friend, Allen Barlow. So, the more ink I added, the more naturally the details were added.....the bass player and a few other members became more visible.
Total time: about 8 hours spread over 3 nights

I use to do hundreds of pen and ink portraits during the 1990's and on into about 2003. Over that time, I bet I drew and sold over 500, no lie! My files are crammed with photocopies of most of these drawings and 90% of them I don't even know or remember who they are. I got burned out with pen eventually and just stopped doing and accepting any type of ink work since then....until recently. A co-worker/friend wanted a portrait of his son in ink for a Mother's Day gift. Here is the photo and the result. It's been 7-8 years.....

Ok....it's been a while since I've uploaded anything to this site.

First, yes, I'm still painting. Lots of painting lately actually. I have a couple of shows coming up and lots are in the works. Only 3 currently finished and awaiting photos so I can upload here. Secondly, here is some of the latest pottery projects I've been working on. This is inspired by my last "Family Date Night" with all the kids. We went to see Alice In Wonderland and this reminds me of the dishes the Mad Hatter used on the tables........wimsey....

Smaller 2 glaze vase. I used Amaco LT-122 Dark Blue, thin applied on the inside and very think around the top edge, then Amaco LT-3 Old Pewter for the bottom outside stripe. Loving the results, so more to come soon!!!!

Larger Vase using Amaco White Art Clay and combining 2 different Amaco glazes. I made for interesting "oozing" effect down the side of the vase......I think I'll do more this way!!!

Rake Vase #1. Completed during a Raku workshop sponsored by the Kentuck Museum in Northport, Alabama. This was the 1st piece removed from the kiln. This is now something I'm going to start doing at home!!!! I love the results!

Flower Vase #2

My second attempt at hand-building a flower looking vase. This vase's pedals are more straight up compared to the first attempt at this style vase. The inside is also a darker red when compared to the first attempt vase. Approx. 8-9 inches tall and 4-5 inches wide. Water tight and dishwasher safe.

A delicate basket weave patter with larger slabs of hunter green swirl patters. This was my first attempt and creating a platter using basket weaved clay. Having to work quickly so the clay does not dry-out was the biggest challenge.

Trying New Things....Pottery

Ok....it has been a long time since I've posted new art on this site. Here is why.....

I've started a fascination with clay and pottery. I've been hand-building pottery for a few years and never took it very serious. I mainly used pottery as a way to get the creative juices flowing in order to paint....to think about painting more clearly while doing my pottery. Well, several months ago, maybe a year ago, I found a pottery kiln for sale in a small local classifieds newspaper for only $50. I went to see it and sure enough bought it. It is the perfect little kiln for what I was making. I can fit several plates or bowls in a fire 4-5 pieces at a time. Perfect for me. So....I started dabbling in pottery a little more. Slowly the shelves around the house were getting full of random pottery pieces and then I also realized the bookshelves were becoming crowded with pottery books and magazines. Then, my Mom said she wanted to get me a pottery wheel. Now I started to really take my pottery art seriously....afterall, Mom got me a great wheel to start with and I already have he kiln. So.....Here are a few of my pottery pieces.

Don't worry....I still have my paint brushes too......

Sigmund Freud

In 1996 I attended Jefferson State Jr. College, and took a psychology course. As we were discussing Freud teachings, I was distracted and began to sketch Freud. We were discussing the fact the Freud says men think about sex usually 6 times per hour on any given day. I was listening, but sketching at the same time. The teacher/professor approached me from behind and discovered what I had been doing. He was going to send me out of the class for not paying attention, but then he saw this sketch. It now hangs on his classroom wall....13 years later, I think it is still there......

I was only going to use this blog for paintings, but after much thought, it is what I've created. During the 1990's through 2000, I completed and sold over 300 pen and ink drawings, mostly portraits of children or pets. This one is one of the favorites.....

The first show I will be participating in for 2009 will be the Scottsboro Three Art Club "Art in the Park" show, September 6th in Scottsboro, Alabama. I was in this show last year and actually won a "Merit" award. This is a 1 day only show on Sunday.

The second show I'm participating in is "Arts on the Green" at Ross Bridge Golf Resort in Birmingham, Al. on October 24th & 25th. This is a 2 day show....both Saturday and Sunday. This is the third annual event and I have never shown at this show before. I hope all goes well.

Everybody come out to the shows and support local artists!!!

I have found art to be my one true unconditional love. It has been with me through all of my most intimate thoughts, through good times and bad. It has seen my ugly and my sweetness. It gives me peace of mind and brings out the best in me. My art is one thing that never fades. People can come and go....my art stays and remains constant.

Currently I have over 20 canvases of unfinished paintings. Most are about 90% complete. It's the last 10% that frustrates the heck out of me and the hardest part of painting. I can see the finished project in my head, but getting it out takes time and effort. Maybe that is the reason I've been focusing on pottery and glass lately. Making pottery pieces is so much more relaxing and instant gratification. I can complete several pieces in 1 setting. Glass melting/sculpting is much the same. Less tedious, less time consuming. I'm not giving up my painting or even slowing down, I've just discovered more creative outlets. I will be posting pottery photos soon, as I'd like to add them to the TerryDoesArt site.

With the economy in the state it is, I will only do 1 or 2 art shows this year. The 1st will be the Montevallo Art Assoc. show April 18th at Orr Park in Montevallo. Last year I won 2nd place at this show for painting. I will also apply for the Kentuck Art Festival held in October, in Northport, AL. It takes several years to get accepted into the show, and this will be my second attempt. I do not expect to be in the show this year, but my chances increase with each new batch of painting. Another artist told me of the Kentuck Show....."someone has to die and give up their spot before another painter is accepted." I don't want anyone to die, but I dream of having a booth at this show one day.......

I can get lost in hours of blues music and complete a painting from start to finish. This is of course BB King. I used a reference photo and only painted with white paint onto a thin black board, and I chose to paint only the highlights from the photograph. Several more in this series are to follow.

I'm supposed to write an "Artist Statement" to describe myself as an artist, but I stink as a writer. My wife was a English major in college, so maybe this is a task better left to one more gifted with words and spelling. I can draw and paint better than I can tell you about my art. Basically, I've been drawing and painting since early childhood. Some of my most vivid memories are drawing for the praises of my preschool teacher. I use to draw her portraits using all black crayons, thus causing her to believe I was a depressed child, although gifted in art. In second and third grades, I had a private art teacher whom I visited every week and completed many large paintings, one of which is framed and still hangs in my parents bedroom. After moving back to Birmingham from Decatur, I tried a few more private art teachers, but didn't find "the one", so I never took any art lessons from then on. I've continued to draw and paint ever since. Throughout the 1990's, I sold over 300 pen and ink portraits. I spent the entire 1990's without touching a paint brush and focused mainly on pen and ink skills. At the beginning of 2000, I started painting again and haven't stopped since. The number of completed paintings is unknown, due to a failed marriage and the destruction of numerous canvases.....many of which were never shown to anyone. I kept them for myself only. My own art therapy, I guess. Currently I am remarried to an incredible, supportive art loving wife, and the paintings are continuing faster than ever. 2008 was the first year I've publicly shown my paintings in various art shows around the southeast. I displayed about 20 paintings at 5 different shows and had great success. I won second place in the Montevallo Arts Council show and another second place at The Scottsboro 3 Arts Club show. Now I've even ventured in pottery and some glass melting.......

Who knows where this will take me.......
